What is it used for? BOTOX® is the only FDA-approved treatment to temporarily improve both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. There are several other areas it can be used for such as the forehead lines, to raise your eyebrow, the bunny or nasalis lines on your nose, straw lines around your mouth, your neck bands and to turn a sad mouth from down to up, (Smile lift).
What can I do before the procedure to help increase the results or diminish any reactions? Staying out of the sun is always a great idea as well as wearing sunscreen with 30% SPF or higher with broad spectrum coverage. You also will want to stay away from blood thinning medication. Please see list.
What are the possible adverse reactions to this procedure and what can be done to diminish this? Three percent of patients experienced eyelid drooping in the frown lines and 1% of patients experienced eyelid swelling in the crow’s feet studies. Other possible side effects include: discomfort or pain at the injection site; headache; and eye problems; double vision, blurred vision, these are not all of the possible side effects please see Botoxcosmetic.com If eye droop does occur there is an ophthalmic solution, eye drops that can be administered and this will help decrease the droop. The droop is not permanent and will resolve itself in 2 weeks to 3 months. Please let us know about all of your muscle or nerve conditions.
How long does the procedure last? BOTOX® Cosmetic injections can last from 3 to 6 months. If you keep on a maintenance schedule, then your results will be better. As you age you will need more unit’s overtime to maintain the same effect. Is there pain during the procedure and what do you do to help diminish the pain? The procedure only takes about 10 minutes, many people chose to have it done on their lunchtime. Some patient report the injections feels like a pinch. We use ice to numb the area prior to injection. We do have topical numbing cream if you feel you need more than ice.
What can I expect immediately after the procedure? Immediately after the procedure you may have small elevated areas where the injections were placed, you can use ice to help diminish this, it should not last longer than an hour. There is always a chance for bruising so it is best to avoid any blood thinners a week before as approved by your primary physician. You can apply makeup if needed. Do not lay down for 3 to 4 hours or exercise the same day. Do not massage the area as you do not want it to diffuse to other areas. Within 2 days to 2 weeks you should see results and be very happy.
Do I make a follow up appointment and will there be a charge? We use minimal BOTOX® we can to give you the best results. At times you may have a stronger muscle or need more due to age and time. We do charge per unit for addition product you may need when you make a follow up appointment. We always do our best to correct any asymmetrical issues and give you results that are as symmetrical as possible. There may be a time when one side is more elevated or then we want you to come back at no charge to place a few more units in the area to correct the issue.
What should I do at home to take care of the area that was treated or what should I not do? Do not exercise or massage the area. Do not lay down for 3 to 4 hours after injections.
